गरबा का शाब्दिक अर्थ है गर्भ दीप. मतलब यह हुआ कि गर्भ दीप को स्त्री के गर्भ की सृजन शक्ति का प्रतीक माना गया है. इसी शक्ति की मां दुर्गा के स्वरूप में पूजा की जाती है. गरबा के दौरान महिलाएं 3 तालियों का प्रयोग करती हैं. ये 3 तालियां इस पूरे ब्रह्मांड के त्रिदेव ब्रह्मा, विष्णु और महेश को समर्पित होती हैं.
गरबा खेलने के दौरान डांस करने में ये तीन तालियां बजाकर इन तीनों देवताओं का आह्वान किया जाता है. इन 3 तालियों की ध्वनि से जो तेज प्रकट होता है और तरंगें उत्पन्न होती हैं, उससे शक्ति स्वरूपा मां अंबा जागृत होती हैं
