New Delhi, Dec 14 (ANI): The reminder of Mughal architecture and largest mosque in India, Jama Masjid, is in urgent need of repair, with many parts of the grand 361-year-old mosque in shambles. The Masjid has been facing water seepage, which has eroded the structural integrity of the main dome and peeled off layers of sandstone and plaster from its walls and intricate parapet carvings. Jama Masjid, the great mosque of Old Delhi, has a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees. The highly decorative mosque is built of red sandstone and marble. The construction of the mosque was begun in 1644 and ended up being the final architectural extravagance of Shah Jahan, the Mughal emperor who built the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort. Jama Masjid was last repaired 10 years ago by the Archaeological Survey of India.
